Brief concise description explaining the innovation

A multispecies microbial assay with genetically diverse test organisms inculuding prokaryotes and a eukaryote.
User-friendly simple protocol conducted in 96 well microtitre plate and data analysis performed with a dedicated software. Test generates unique toxicity fingerprint.

Typical (recommended) application of the method

Suitable for testing chemicals and both aquatic and terrestrial environmental samples. Applications to date include testing of wastwaters, receiving waters, soils, effluents, sediments, and leachates.

Strengths

Multi-species chronic evaluation. Low cost compared to conventional ecotoxicity tests.
Assay has undergone rigorous intra-laboratory and International inter-laboratory validation.
MARA has been employed in a number of projects and is currently in use worldwide.

Weaknesses

Not a direct contact test. Further development is in progress.
