A csomagolószerek funkciója, hogy a termékeket a lehető legeredményesebben lehessen tárolni és szállítani állaguk megőrzése mellett. Miután a termékek eljutottak a felhasználási helyükre, a csomagolóeszköz hulladékká válik. Folyékony anyagokat, élelmiszereket nagy mennyiségben csomagolnak PET (polietilén tereftalátból készült, un. pille) palackba, melyek életciklusuk végén hulladékká válnak.
