A halfeldolgozó üzembe miután beérkezik a hal mossák, eltávolítják a bőrét, filézik, darabolják, majd előfőzik. Ezután a konzervdobozokba már sósvízbe kerül, amiben olaj vagy ízesített szósz hozzáadása után lezárt állapotban autoklávozzák. Mindezen folyamatok során felhasznált vizet nevezhetjük a halfeldolgozó konzervüzemek szennyvízének.

1000 kg hal feldolgozásához 15 m3 vízre van szükség, 57 kWh elektromos áramra, 113 kWh hőenergiára. A termék ebből 425 kg konzervhal.
Az elfolyó szennyvíz paraméterei: BOD: 52 kg, COD: 116 kg, Teljes nitrogén: 3 kg, Teljes foszfor: 0,4 kg, halbelsőség: 375 kg.
